Tbilisi serves as the ideal starting point for your journey, providing easy access to the many wonders that Georgia has to offer.

With its diverse landscapes, unique cultural heritage, and charming communities, the final destination – the majestic mountains of Adjara – truly holds a special place in our hearts and should leave a lasting impression.

These, of course, are some recommendations to whet your appetite and get you started. It’s best if you modify and adapt the itinerary to your particular needs.

Route

01. Uplistsikhe

Uplistsikhe, also known as the “Fortress of God,” is a historical gem located just 15 km east of the town of Gori, on the left bank of the Mtkvari river. This ancient rock-hewn town has played a significant role in Georgian history and was a significant religious, political, and cultural center during the Hellenistic and late Antique periods. At its peak, the town was thriving from the 9th to the 11th centuries. However, the town was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century.

02. Tskaltubo

Tskaltubo, a charming and verdant town near Kutaisi, is renowned for its spa and mineral springs, which have been used for therapeutic purposes for centuries. The town is a hub of history, where guests can delve into the rich past of Soviet times and explore abandoned sanatoriums that once served as the center of Balneotherapy. Despite its former glory, Tskaltubo struggled after the fall of the USSR and faced challenges with refugees settling in abandoned sanatoriums.

03. Martvili (overnight)

Martvili is a small town located in the Samegrelo region of Western Georgia, approximately 280 km from the capital city of Tbilisi. The town is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and lush vegetation. With its rich blend of nature, history, and Megrelian culture, the region is the perfect destination for exploration. In addition to its stunning canyons, caves, and waterfalls, Martvili has plenty to offer, including its picturesque town, complete with its majestic monastery and renowned Friday market.

04. Tsikhisdziri (Overnight)

Tsikhisdziri, a hidden gem in Adjara, is a lesser-known but stunning piece of heaven, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots. Apart from its beach that boasts crystal-clear waters and dazzling scenery, one of the most notable sights in Tsikhisdziri is the Petra Fortress, an astonishing historical monument that sits atop a rocky hill overlooking the black sea.

05. Mtsvane Tba

Located in the Khulo municipality, Mtsvane Tba or Green Lake is a stunning natural wonder that sits at 2058 meters above sea level. The lake is well known for its vibrant, natural green color. 5-6 km paved road from Goderdzi Pass winds its way through Adjarian summer settlements and gets you to the lake. Take the opportunity and interact with locals, sample their delicious food and hear their stories. If you’re looking for a more adventurous experience, take a 3km hike to the nearby Sabanela lake. Hiking in foggy weather is not recommended as it can limit visibility.

We’ve put together some of the Campsites we know around Georgia, and you can find them here. Have a good look and do further research before choosing your camping spot. Some spots are only reachable on foot, and therefore it’s possible to camp there with tents only.

What to see

Explore the ancient town of Uplistikhe on foot. Guided tours are available that provide more information about the site’s history and significance.

We’d single out these 3 historic sanatoriums in Tskaltubo: Sanatorium Iveria, Sanatorium Medea, and Sanatorium Imereti – a glimpse into the glory of the old times.

Martvili Canyons are of course the “must visit”, however it has become too touristy. Try exploring these canyons instead: Gachedili Canyon, Balda, Okatse Canyons, Kinchka waterfalls and just 20 minutes away from Martvili you’ll find the Nokalakevi hot springs – amazing place.

Seaside Shukura – This local gem is a popular destination for swimming, day drinking. It has recently become even more sought-after with the opening of the trendy restaurant-bar, Shukura.

Where to eat

Tskaltubo: Otia’s ezo
Martvili: Apart from karma, for a delicious lunch, visit Oda Family Marani or Kalakis Chrdilshi, a local restaurant in Khoni.
Tsikhisdziri: Shukura
If you head towards Batumi, make a stop at the Batumi Fish Market. Browse the selection of freshly caught fish and choose one that appeals to your taste. The nearby restaurants will cook it up while you wait.

Lodging

There are days when you decide to stay overnight in a hostel, hotel, or guesthouse to stretch your legs, have a proper shower, restock and refill the water. For those days, consider these lodging options.

Spending a night at Tskaltubo Spa Resort, Georgia’s Restored Soviet-era Sanatorium, might be a bit pricy, yet unique experience. In the past, this sanatorium served as a vacation spot for the officials of the Soviet Union, but like many other institutions, it was abandoned in 1991. In 2011, it has been given a new life as the Tskaltubo Spa Resort.
